By video conference we spoke with Jodie Rawn, the Managing Director of the Civic Action Leadership Foundation in Toronto Canada about why Leadership matters. Jodie talked about civic leadership and the effects and problems associated with the majority of people living in cities. She encouraged us to look at “who is at your table?” and being aware of the voices that are being heard and those who are missed.
We then interacted with Ed O’Malley, Chief Executive from The Kansas Leadership Centre, who encouraged us to ask questions and to lead change by focusing on the greatest concern and what is making progress in this area so difficult? Ed is currently furthering his own leadership journey by running for Governor of Kansas in 2018.
Sina Wendy Moore
Sina Wendy Moore, Chief Executive from Leadership New Zealand gave us insights into how they develop and inspire their leaders. Sharyne Fong, Executive Director Leadership Fiji then gave a Pacific Island view on leadership.
Talking to leaders around the world reinforced the concept that leaders are necessary to creating the results we want in our business and communities and that with the willingness to stand up we can create lasting impacts. There are many great programs that can help us create global networks.
Through sharing of their experience, we now know that the challenges we face in our communities are similar to what happens internationally. Leadership programs are an important means to equip individuals to take that path to effect change.
In the afternoon, we put into practice one of the techniques from Ed O’Malley. The adaptive leadership process helped us to get some great feedback and challenge our thoughts on our community projects, and to open new ideas and avenues to pursue.
Overall it was a great day and inspiring to see other similar programs around the world helping to create new adaptive leaders for our future.
